Dr. Kaylan Edwards, M.D.
Dr. Edwards is a North Carolina native who has always been proud to call North Carolina her home. She grew up in Wake Forest, NC. She then attended Meredith College. While at Meredith, she earned her Bachelor of Science in both Chemistry and Biology. It was here she found professors that have since become life long mentors and sparked her love for education and teaching others. She always said if she couldn’t become a doctor, she was going to teach chemistry - and she did for a little while!
Her mom will tell you, that she never remembers Kaylan wanting to become anything but a doctor. While in college, she met several professors from The Brody School of Medicine and quickly knew that is where she wanted to be. She was attracted to their mission to “improve the health and well-being” of North Carolina by training primary care physicians who had a passion for serving North Carolina. With much determination, she attended the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. During medical school, she was selected as a North Carolina Board of Governors Medical Scholar. She went on to complete her Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at ECU Health (formerly Vidant Medical Center) at East Carolina University as well. She became board certified in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in 2019.
As a child, Dr. Edwards spent every minute of her free time on her grandparents farm in Whiteville, NC. She loved being outside and having so many things to keep her busy. Her grandfather will still talks of how she would crawl on his back and stay with him all day doing anything he did - she never even questioned if she could do it, she just did! To this day, she still has a very tight bond with her grandparents. It was in Whiteville, that she really learned what it meant to serve a community and knew she was meant to be a physician. She loved everyone knowing their neighbors, and dropping everything to help when one was in need. Although some call it “being busy,” she thought it was amazing how a group of ladies would just show up with a full meal at the first hint of someone being sick or having an unexpected family event. In a way, it is a lost art - caring for others like they are your own family.
When it was time to start her career, Dr. Edwards had her heart set on coming to Southeastern North Carolina. She always wanted to be close to her family and said she would one day retire to the beach. When the opportunity came to start her career in Brunswick County, her husband, James, said “why wait for retirement, let’s go now.” They moved just a few months later and have never looked back! In 2022, Dr. Edwards and her husband embarked on their greatest adventure in life as they welcomed their son. To be a daughter, granddaughter, sister, wife, and mother is a true blessing in life. Serving as the physician to fellow sons and daughters, grandchildren, spouses, parents, and grandparents is an honor. She and her family look forward to serving the families of Brunswick County and surrounding areas for many years to come.
